ABOUT

Director Pierre Burger is a highly-skilled lawyer advising in the Africa; Arbitration; Dispute Resolution; and China practice areas. Pierre obtained his BA (Hons) in Latin at the University of Cape Town and the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam in 1996. His course work included transcribing, translating, editing and commenting on the previously untranscribed Casus Codicis of the 12-century legal scholar Wilhelmus de Cabriano. Pierre deals primarily with high-quantum commercial disputes across various sectors and industries. With a particular interest in international arbitration, Pierre has written widely on the topic, and contributes the South Africa chapter to the World Arbitration Reporter, an international comparative publication.

  • Pierre obtained his BA (Hons) in Latin at the University of Cape Town and the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam in 1996. 
  • His course work included transcribing, translating, editing and commenting on the previously untranscribed Casus Codicis of the 12-century legal scholar Wilhelmus de Cabriano. 
  • After completing his law degree in 1998, Pierre qualified as an attorney in 2001. During a brief sabbatical from the profession in 2002 he acted as the legislative draftsman, speechwriter and legal researcher to the Leader of the Opposition in the South African parliament. 
  • Pierre joined Werksmans in Johannesburg in 2006, and currently practises as a director in the litigation department. He deals primarily with high-quantum commercial disputes in the Contentious Regulatory, Technology and Telecommunications, Mining and Resources, and General Commercial sectors. With a special interest in arbitration, particularly international arbitration, Pierre has written widely on the topic, and contributes the South Africa chapter to the World Arbitration Reporter, an international comparative publication
